Hiring a developer in another country can get you excellent work at a fair price, as long as you know what to look for. I’ve worked remotely with clients in Canada and the USA since 2020. Here is the checklist I’d use if I were in your shoes.
1. Look at live work, not just screenshots
Ask for links to real websites that are online today, and click through them on your phone. Are they fast? Do the forms work? Would you trust that business? Screenshots can be mock-ups. Live sites can’t hide.
2. Check for long-term relationships
Anyone can do one project. Clients who stay for years are the best signal of reliability, communication and quality after launch.
3. Agree on how you’ll communicate
Time zones are rarely the problem; silence is. Agree up front how you’ll talk (email, WhatsApp, video calls), how often you’ll get updates and when you can expect replies.
4. Get a written scope and fixed quote
A good proposal lists the pages, features, timeline, what you need to provide and what’s not included. A fixed quote protects both sides. A deposit to start with the balance on completion is a common, fair structure.
5. Make sure you’ll own everything
Confirm in writing that you’ll own the final website and code on full payment, and that the domain and hosting accounts are registered in your name, not the developer’s.
6. Ask how you’ll update the site
Will you be able to change text, photos and prices yourself? Ask for a walkthrough at handover, and ask what ongoing support costs if you need help later.
7. Ask about speed, SEO and security
A beautiful site that nobody finds is wasted money. Ask how the developer handles page speed, technical SEO, mobile performance, backups and security updates.
8. Start with a conversation
A short call tells you a lot: do they ask about your business and customers, or just the colour scheme? The best developers care about your results, not just the code.
